What is a tank If we would believe Mr. Webster a tank is "A heavily armed and armoured vehicle that moves on tracks". The important part in that description is the word tracks. No tracks, your an armoured car no matter the size of weapon or level of armour. This description simple though it is is accurate all the way back to the tank's first appearence at Cambre in WW1. The WW1 tanks were little more than boxes with tracks that revolved around the outside of a 'Box'. the earliest versions were simply armed with multiple machine guns to enable infantry to break through the opposing sides front line. The photo below is a good example of a an early tank from the Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. The tanks which rumbled across the trenches would have been of a similar shape, though totaly encased in armour & sprouting multiple machine guns and light direct fire cannon.
Tanks have progressed and although still riding on tracks are more lethal and much more highly armoured. Click here to continue |
